Striking Album Covers

I do like the Cradle of Filth type treatment, so effective in its context.

@Jem in agreement about Vaughan Oliver... I particularly like his design work for the Cocteau Twins and Pixies, such a perfect pairing of sound and artistic vision.

@MonteBoyd it's all in the "y" :)

@Jem looks more like the proofreader's mark to indicate a section of text is set too high. So perhaps grab myproofreadersmarktoindicateasectionoftextissettoohigh.com as well. Just to be on the safe side.

New Racket Site

@Jem - Thanks Jem

@Gidget - Cheers - and yep, we are going back and writing summary's of the projects - far and away our least favourite part of the whole process - but invaluable all the same.

the client that doesn't know what they want

Posted 10.05.2012 @ 11.53AM

I only realised recently that one of the most important questions you have to ask yourself on every job is Are they paying me to give them what they want or are they paying me to tell them what they need?

And once you can answer that question (and it can be different for every job, even with the same client) the job tends to go a lot easier.

the client that doesn't know what they want

Tricky. I think the idea is to present it in what I call the Paul Rand flourish:

1 Current state of affairs
2 Problems client wanted you to solve
3 Detail solutions to the problems using your enormous design experience and training
4 Present the design solution, showing how design solves problems
5 Pause a bit
6 request payment
7 threaten physical violence
8 Nicolas Cage impression
9 leave (using grappling hook)

Printdesign Portfolio - digital vs printed

Posted 06.05.2012 @ 10.36AM

Get a folio printed at Blurb or somewhere like that. Costs about 100 bucks but it's taxable and if it's not worth $100 to get a folio printed then you don't really want the job.
