I saw this last night. Was surprised it was for a local TV series. Was waiting for the big brand to appear. Quite dug it actually.

@ Marcus - completely agree. One word: Banksy. What he did wasn't cool before he did it. Now people sell walls he's left his mark on.
@ Dave - fair question. I still believe that an individual needs to have a point of difference. Well-promoted vanity projects can definitely help shape the future while still putting food on the table.
@ Molte - yes, it's a natural thing to do but I still believe in the long-term benefit of a strong point of view of what someone (or an agency) is good at.

Hey Pete
Thanks for the comment. Marketers may feel nervous about sharing data, for sure, but it depends on whether they have it, trust you with it, think you'll understand it and can do something with it or about it. Some may not want to talk about specific unit numbers but may be happy to share %'s. Either way, numbers are a good place to start any creative project so they know you're in it for them - not just your own creative expression (which is still important).
I'd be surprised if they felt you were doing their job. Marketers bring in agencies, partners, people all the time to get things done. That's part of their remit.
Let me know how you go!

RE: 10 things my hip hop magazine taught me on 17th May 2010 @ 8.39 PM in Talks
Hi Michael - it's been a few years since I published an issue. Mags are in the wars right now. As for adland, since I was 20 I've been in agencies of some kind. I used to work on my mag at night. I did have a year or two focusing almost exlcusively on the mag in my mid-20s though. Publishing is a tough gig - especially something as niche as underground hip hop... in the Southern Hemisphere. So, yes, having to provide for my family has definitely guided some of my thinking.
@Jamesb - Thanks for the note. Doesn't surprise me at all that a lot of designery types are into hip hop. It's cool like that.
