Women.
Posted 15.06.2011 @ 10.20PM
Lorena has beautifully articulated my position on this issue and I to, cannot comprehend how it is possible that being a woman in design could in any way be viewed as a hindrance.
It saddens me that this debate still happens, as all it seems to do is draw attention to and exacerbate this (apparent) gender divide rather than create any sort of positive outcome. The other aspect of this debate that rather irritates me is that *volunteers* are being attacked because of their gender and/or marital status. Firstly, gender and marital status are irrelevant. These people are donating their time and effort to help further the design industry and community that we are all a part of. Secondly, the only thing that should be directed at volunteers is mountains of thanks and praise and/or relevant and heartfelt constructive criticism that is framed in a helpful manner.
I can safely say that, within the design industry, I have never encountered bias or discrimination based on the fact that I am a woman. Nor have I ever entertained the thought that my gender may somehow be detrimental to my design career. That said, as I am only a graduate designer that has yet to participate in the design industry environment full-time, I have very little experience to back this up. Perhaps in a couple of years, my position may have changed but I definitely hope it hasn’t, and that it never will.
One thing I am curious about is this line that keeps popping up about female designers not volunteering to help out on AIF. Back in April, I responded to a slightly off-topic comment about volunteering on AIF and followed up with an email to @aistrope but never heard back from anyone. I would dearly love to help out as this site and the community on the forum has given me so much and continues to do so.

Have talked about this with @aistrope a little, definitely keen to help out. What about in a public space like a park, get a creative picnic vibe happening. Or if anyone has a rooftop they'd like to offer up...
