Subcontracting

Posted 13.01.2012 @ 1.32PM

yeah great. thanks alstrope. thanks tony.
on the outset it seems sketchy but i'll be talking to the agency further about how it will all work. i'm beginning to think if they can and typically do pull in the scale of projects and consistency of work that i'm after, it may be ok - while still allowing me to pursue and develop my own business interests.

there's no official commitment so at least i'm not tied down to anything. we'll see how things progress but i'll be sure not to commit to anything too hastily.

cheers guys,
benj.

Subcontracting

Posted 11.01.2012 @ 4.43PM (Edited 11.01.2012 @ 4.45PM)

I'm an independent designer, having been working for an agency on odd design jobs - predominantly brand identity.

Effectively running my own business and they being a client of mine, I use the work I create for their clients to self promote.

Yesterday, the agency proposed I work under their name so I can attend their workshops and be involved in pitches and briefings etc. with the assurance that I'm representing their company, not myself as an agent.

This would mean I set up an email account under their name, carry around one of their business cards with my name on it while maintaining my subcontractor status and continuing to work from home.

I'm not used to this scenario. It's entrepreneurial of them but sounds odd to me. I'm not exactly staff so why would I have their email and business card? I'm not on payroll, I invoice them directly.

Are there any other designers out there in a similar situation? Would you go ahead with this offer if it meant working on larger projects? How would copyright work in this situation? Can I still use the work produced for their clients to self promote? Is this kind of thing normally put down in writing?

Thanks.

Value of Designers in Advertising

Posted 09.12.2011 @ 9.36AM

I'm beginning to think I may have missed an opportunity to profit more on a recent advertising campaign because the job is being split up into so many segments that it's become more of time based invoicing than value based.

How are designers typically valued in advertising - since a campaign is dependent on their production skill if not creativity as well? In view of sustaining a business, what is justifiably and industry accepted when charging advertisers for design work - well above, equal to or considerably below advertising rates?

Looking forward to your thoughts.

Can you share your thoughts in a brief Design Survey?

Posted 01.09.2011 @ 6.24PM

Hi,

I'm undertaking some research as part of my studies to understand more about professional practice.
I'd greatly appreciate if you can support my research by responding to the following questions.

There's 10 questions but should only take about 5 minutes to complete.

Thanks in advance,
Benj.

Where can I find sample branding proposals for reference?

Posted 05.06.2011 @ 9.40PM

I'd like to refine my proposal template a little and would like to know if there are any professional proposals that you know of (possibly online) that I can reference? If they're specifically branding proposals, that would be great.

Thanks,
Benj.
