@corymayfield I know it's enticing to start your own company... I don't want to discourage you, but I'd recommend you get more experience first. There's a lot you can learn from working for design firms, and ones in different fields.
The best thing is to search for graphic design firms in your area, who are doing work which appeals to you.
Then approach them to do work experience... but make sure the resume you send them displays your talent. And reinforce that you'd like to help them... even make coffee, just to learn more.
There's nothing worse than a work experience student who wastes your time... but a work experience designer often receives more back.
In the past we've hired numerous graphic designers who have done work experience with us... because we can see their design talent, their motivation and attitude. Actually I did work experience for two companies that I ended-up working for.
Oh, and make sure your resume and folio don't have typos!
