Posted 09.12.2011 @ 6.50PM
Hi,
just wondering if anyone has any good references for learning mobile website design - books, blogs etc? Starting on a new job in January and this will be my first task, so keen to read up and learn over the Christmas holidays

The perils of working from home- The Age Article
Posted 17.10.2011 @ 8.34PM
I have 2 jobs: firstly I'm a web designer, working from home, with 2 children, have done for 7 years, and have a few good clients - updates and general work, a few casual jobs always on the go and enough income to warrant the business. When I'm not there I work as a mine surveyor 2 days a week / fortnight when they need me.
If I had to choose, I would always pick the web design job purely because I love what I do. However, if it was for lifestyle or 'jobstyle' reasons, the surveyor job would win everytime.
When I'm at the mine its dirty and hot, I'm outside all day, but I get to have a real conversation with someone in my own field, and I get to focus on my task for 11 hours straight.
When I'm working at home I can sleep in past 4:30am, if the kids let me, do a bit of cleaning, take kids to school, do some shopping, come home and start work, put on some laundry, make lunch etc. Its much more comfortable, but a lot less productive, purely because its my job, while I'm home, to do all the other stuff too.
When I leave the mine, I stop work, when I leave my home office, I'm always trying to get back in there, just to put a finishing touch on something. And when I'm home working with 2 kids, its really really hard to concentrate.
Well, there's my experience

web hosting & hackers & viruses
Posted 26.07.2011 @ 2.13PM
Hi all,
I'm an avid follower, but shy and infrequent poster... but have come across a problem with web hosting that I would love to know you're thoughts / experience about.
A website that I maintain has recently been accessed by a hacker and several viruses have been uploaded to various locations throughout the website. The site does use a custom built CMS with uploader scripts, however, the viruses were found in numerous locations apart from these and in ftp folders that only I have password access to. This is the second time in six months that this has happened.
My question is, is this common / normal? and is it more common with some web hosting companies than others? After 7 years of dealing with a number of different web hosts from very cheap to large and expensive, this is the only time this has happened to me...
Thanks!

What apps do your kids use?
Posted 17.03.2011 @ 7.41PM
Good Idea!
I'm a big fan of Animalia app - but it was nearly $20 when I bought it for a long road trip - maybe too dear, but when you look at the price of a book...
Angry Birds, without fail, is the favourite.
And google earth - suprising for a 5 year old, but as we have family spread across the world, its nice to zoom in on them sometimes

@scotty - Appreciate the nice comments
@H_Johnston - Thank You im glad you like it,
@greenturtle - Thanks you means a lot!
From a personal skill level I just want to be able to build a website and know that its foundations are correct and that it is coded correctly e.g. HTML and CSS is all valid and structured the way it should be
Like using the proper techniques for achieving certain results, they don't teach you this stuff at TAFE, they just tell a bit from here and a bit from there give you an overview of for example html, or css and they explain what it means and what it does and they teach you a few css selectors, but im passed all that.
basically that's why im asking these questions, as no one has pointed out to me and said look that's a well built website and pointed out the features as to why that is.
