I guess cause I havn't been working professionally just yet I can be positive about it hahaha
In the end of the day theres nothing anybody else that can say that will get you over and out of the wall. We as a community of creatives can only offer experiences, support and if you're lucky some inspiration. Ultimately its in you and only you.
You're going have to confront yourself, ask yourself what is it thats bothering you about design? Is this the career you want to be pursuing if its going to make you constantly unhappy?
On a positive side why do you like it if at all?
If it was me i'd give freelance a go, then it'll me, the work and the client. Thats it. You mentioned you're worried about experience, I say go for it mate. Start small, some tradie in the local paper offer him some logo work or something. You know more than they do so don't be scared.
Have you considered taking a gap year? Maybe its just time for a break, go find yourself.
Im sorry my word may not be one to go by as i do lack that experience but hopefully a friendly word is what you needed.
All the best mate :)

Second on the Continuous Ink Supply Systems. I had the same budget for you and I came to the conclusion that a $500 would get me a decent A3+ (I ended up with an Epson Stylus 1410) Inkjet than a low range colour laser.
The Epson does pretty good, takes it thick or thin, haha, but I do find its a bit fiddly getting the right settings, the right paper and such. But when you do it does well.
