A new beginning but uncertain of the future...

Hi Tony, yeah I will be moving to Melbourne initially to settle down as I stayed there before. Now seriously looking into taking up the short course offered by Shillington College and hopefully it will get me inspired and switch to a "learning mode" which I reckon is important when trying to get into a new industry.

Thanks for info on the design events and your encouragement, I think I will give it a shot! :)

A new beginning but uncertain of the future...

I studied uni and worked in Australia as web developer before moving to another country 5 years ago. While working in Australia and collaborating with web designers, I gradually started to appreciate the web design/creative process and gotten interested in the design part of web (and also design/creative industry as a whole). And attended a certificate course in graphic design out of interest and also I could be more well-rounded as a web developer

Being away oversea where a web-related company is almost non-existence, I worked mostly on the technical areas of Bank, Telco and IT solution provider. Needless to say, work exposure to design and creative areas and even everyday exposure to eye-catching posters or adverts are almost nil. I came to realize that day-to-day living and surroundings are an important element to keep one creatively intrigued. And also my interest in design gradually diminishes. I did some freelance work and gotten a few local clients but overall the experience was not that great given companies here don't believe much in proper web presence where companies are happy with a "facebook or blog-presence". However I still follow and catch up on the web development news and open source CMS like drupal and wordpress.

Being away from Australia since then, I'm planning to move back to Australia beginning of next year. Working in the IT / technical sector for so long and gotten a bit tired of this industry, I am thinking of making a career shift to a design/creative related job and start anew. And also thought of studying a short-term design course just to get myself inspired again. However my dilemma is that I'm unsure if this is the right move given I'm "less-inspired" now and uncertain if I should make such an abrupt jump in career given I'll be making lifestyle changes from relocation as well.

Writing here hopefully I could get some feedback as I used to check out this site a lot when I was working in Australia back then. Just chip in if you have some comments or similar experiences =)
