Film poster design for short film - The Corn Is Flowering
'The Corn Is Flowering' is an Australian Director’s Guild award nominated short film that follows the story of a poverty stricken family in rural China, told through the eyes of a six year old child.
The biggest obstacle in designing this poster was communication as the director of the film is Chinese and only speaks English as a second language. She had no previous experience working with a designer and the turnaround time for the poster was only two days with no face to face meetings. The poster had to use visuals that would appeal to a Chinese audience and an Australian audience.
The entire film is in Chinese and is inspired by the writer/director's experience growing up in rural China. I was faced with the challenge of designing a poster that embodied a world I have never experienced personally. It had to epitomise both the theme of the corrupted political landscape in China as well as the innocent and naive perspective of the central character who is only six years old.
