Just had a Skype convo with a prospect, where during our hour long talk they asked about the design component, and where that would come from. They said that they did not have faith in Australian designers, and had not seen a "great" Australian designed site, were much more enamoured with designers coming out of NYC. I was a little taken aback, didn't really know what to say other than "if you want a NYC designer working on this project I'm sure that requirement can be addressed".
Seems a pretty geographically outdated perspective... but if they have *a particular designer / studio* in mind, then fair enough.. but it should be worded to reflect that.
We just spent 4 months touring through Germany, France, Switzerland & Russia and I would say comprehensively that the opposite is true. There is some cracking design coming out of Australia and just as importantly the level of design engagement by business (even very small business) is very high..
Mosig, 100% agree with you. I've also worked for long enough in this business to have seen MANY Australian designers head hunter by US based agencies. But in the end there's only so much you're going to debate anything with a prospective client, and then you decide if it's worth "sucking up" your personal view just for the moment, or passing on the project.
