My usual process for web design and development starts with various emails exchanged, a phone call, and if possible, meet up in person. Unfortunately, all the clients I've worked with, have never asked me to deal with various aspects such as:
Domain names (including domain emails)
& Content management systems
Now this has become quite a problem for me as I now have a client who has asked for all of the above (He's not sure if a CMS is required). I know to purchase/set up domain names, but I was wondering what's the easiest way for the client to go about obtaining all these things.
Is it custom to let them setup the domain name and emails + hosting? Or do I purchase it and add the additional cost onto the invoice? (This also brings up the problem of the recurring costs, should I have to invoice them every month as I'm paying for it?). Should I look into reseller accounts for hosting even If I only have one client who requires it?
I've never purchased email accounts though domain providers as I've never had the need to. The client has asked for 5-10 different accounts. What's the best way to go about this?
I'd love to know how you guys go about this process, so all the help you can give is much appreciated :)
If you start buying domains and hosting for clients then you begin becoming a sudo domain and web host. My advice is don't do it unless you're prepared to offer the support when things go bad. It's not worth the headache just to make a few extra bucks a month.
I plan on offering the client both alternatives, either through the same host or through Zoho. The only reason I'm offering Zoho as well, is because it offers all the requirements that my client needs, but for $200 less.
Email accounts set up with your host (a host you need for the website anyway) doesn't cost anything, so not really sure what the $200 figure you're quoting is about??
Domain name purchased and managed via someone like namecheap.com (around $10/yr).
Website hosting by someone like Stablehost ($5 - $20 / month).
Email set-up via Cpanel on web host = free (comes with hosting).
