Wondering how people are finding the current economic climate. I'm not really in touch as I'm focusing full time on my startup now so just doing the odd short term gig here and there when something interesting pops up. My wife has plenty of work coming in but she's pretty specialised.
Is there much work out there? Anyone jumped from freelance to full time for security or the other way because businesses are reducing overheads?
Short answer - I don't think things are that good although the unemployment rate just went down.
I'm trying to switch from freelance to full time/contract or even regular part time. Struggling to find anything half decent. The industry seems to cater to only juniors and middle weights. And in those jobs, employers are asking for a long list of skills & experience within 1-3 years, then paying them peanuts. It's unrealistic IMHO.
Senior jobs are rare. Interesting and well paid senior positions even rarer.
In Brisbane its a mixed bag I think with the general quality of work not being greatly interesting, generally speaking the pay rate is crazy low although now there's loads of jobs for UX designers and the pay rates seem significantly higher if UX is mentioned.
I've talked to a bunch of other designers in Sydney recently and they said pay rates for designers in Sydney is actually really high at the moment and that some of the recruiters are desperate for good designers although it doesn't mean they have great jobs haha.
From what I hear (was just back for a visit) there's a bit of work around in digital across the board at the moment, though the majority of the better/more senior jobs aren't advertised, more through word of mouth, so important to keep/make those contacts more than ever I think.
