This is a big problem not just for freelancers, but for sole traders and micro business owners in general - there's around $18B not going into super each year. I'm working on a solution with DragonBill at the moment.
I've got an industry fund -AvSuper - from an old job, pretty dismal performance this year, around 2% return I think.
Yeah, I've been pretty bad at allocating money to super from freelance gigs. Typically I get to the end of the year and make a lump sum contribution to reduce my taxable income... which is a kinda risky way to go.
As far as funds go I'm with UniSuper from my time working at my uni fast food joint a decade ago. Fortunately it has performed well. An alternative I've been recommended Host Plus Indexed Balanced due to its super low fees. They wont outperform the market but neither will most managed funds in the long run. Host Plus also offer Choiceplus for those who want to control where their money is invested without the significant fee structure usually incurred by a SMSF.
