This has probably been mentioned before in the forums but just cant find it, so apologies:)
Looking at heading overseas next year to work in London and just trying to suss out a few things and whats going in the way of jobs.
Does anyone know of a similar site for the uk like infront? while im at it, does anyone know what the job market over there is like at the moment (hopefully not too terrible!)
I've been over here for just shy of 2 years now and my visa runs out in January although I'm coming back to Aus for a couple weeks as I'm getting sponsored and got offered a promotion to Art Director in my studio.
In regards to the job market over here, it can be pretty tough at the moment from what I've heard but I guess it depends on your experience and how hard you'll get out there, meet people and network etc.
I know we had a lot of temps over the summer period who were good and well and truly over qualified for the roles they were temping for but just because the competition they were happy to have some work. In saying that, I know we also had some temps who were pretty bad who seemed to have been getting quite a bit of work as well so I guess its the same as anywhere. The more you put yourself out there and get in contact, promote yourself, the more luck you will have.
James - totally agree, sometimes its about who you know and networking. congrats on the sponsorship here and the promotion! hopefully if things go well and i like it in the uk i can go down the same path with sponsorship:)
From what I noticed earlier in the year, the financial sitch in the UK at the mo meant a lot of studios etc were relying more and more on friends, friends of friends and people that knew quite well and were, therefore seen as reliable. So getting involved in some sort of informal social network is more important in the UK than ever before. British designers are voracious users of stuff like Tumblr, Twitter, Facebook so it's better to cover a few bases than try and find a single cliquey forum site.
Yeah it's pretty fucked at the moment. I was made redundant in October and spent the last 3 months trying to find something else. I HAD the sponsored visa but when you lose a big chunk of a client that the agency relies heavily on, cuts had to be made. I've freelanced since and have been doing well, but only through contacts I've made here or recruiters. Most of them are a waste of oxygen anyway.
I'm heading home soon against my will as I'll be illegal soon. Maybe it will pick up again after the Christmas/NY period is done but it's still very competitive and jobs are scarce.
Get in contact with these guys, I know them well and they're very good at networking and keeping in the loop with a lot of creative events/talent/agencies.
Yeah I am, I'm not sure they even know that I've left yet, so like a hockey player I'm getting the puck out of here before they have the opportunity to kick me out or check to see that I'm working. Would happily trade passports, I want to be here to see Leeds rise back to the premiership.
