Cerebral Palsy Alliance, in partnership with the University of Technology Sydney (UTS), is holding Australia’s first Enabled by Design-athon at UTS on Friday 25 and Saturday 26 July 2014. This two day ideas and prototyping fest aims to inspire Australia’s mainstream design and technology community to embrace universal design – ‘design for all’ – including people with a disability.

If you’re a product designer, technologist, engineer, creative, entrepreneur, UTS students, person with a disability or disability professional, then we want to hear from you!

This fun and fast-paced events starts with a series of Lightning Talks from industry practitioners and innovators. Then, you’ll join a team to design and prototype new products and technologies that are more accessible, attractive and easier for everyone to use. Each team will have a challenge based on a different type of disability, to gain first-hand experience of how great design can change lives.

The challenge stage of the event will be facilitated by UK-based Denise Stephens from Enabled by Design and Dom Campbell from FutureGov, who hosted the first Enabled by Design-athon in London in 2012. “We’re creating a movement for accessibility for the masses so that mainstream products work for as many people as possible, including those with disabilities and older people”, said Denise. “The Design-athon will challenge people’s preconceptions of assistive equipment and technology, showing how these products can be personalised, purposeful and beautifully designed!”

The event is free of charge but places are limited. Please apply online at www.enabledbydesignathon.org.au Enabled by Design-athon Sydney 2014 is proudly sponsored by the Department of Family and Community Services.
